Hambaobao doesn't seem to fit in Beauty World's top level open air food court. It is the one of the very few western food stalls and the owners are probably the youngest ones there. But business was brisk on a weekday when we decided to embark on a 10 minute walk from home under the hot sun just to give 'em burgers a chance.
I ordered the Spiced Pulled Pork Burger ($4.50) which was pretty decent. The bun was crispy and fragrant. I wasn't really a fan of coleslaw though; would have preferred good ol' lettuce. The pulled pork was nicely spiced and grilled. Would have expected it to be a little juicier and more tender! Maybe, omitting the grilling will be a wiser choice. Also, the cheese used is exactly the same as the one in Macdonald's fillet-o-fish.
Hubs ordered their signature Ayam Buah Keluak Burger ($4.50). It came with nyonya chap chye which tasted authentic/legit. The patty tasted like buah keluak blended with minced chicken - very special and if you are a fan of buah keluak, you will love it! Add $1 to your burger and you will get a good amount of Fairy Fries - hand cut crispy oh so sinful but yummy potato fries with the skin intact! Awesome value.
In the short span of time we spent sitting and eating at the stall, a group of caucasians kept going back to the stall to order more burgers. I think this is probably the best testimony that their burgers are good, though there remains slight room for improvement.
Kudos to the young pair of entrepreneurs (apparently they're only 22 and 25 years old)! I cannot imagine myself toiling in the heat, cramped up in the small space frying burgers for hours on end. They're definitely not your usual gen y kiddos, for sure! Do pop by and show them some support and encouragement as they have proven that not all gen y kids only can manage the 9 to 5 deskbound white collar job.
